The Best Friend a Voiceover Businessman could ask for

Who’s your best friend in business?

That’s a really good question! Is it:

  • Your business partner?
  • Your lawyer?
  • Your marketing agency?
  • Your CRM software?
  • Your clients?
  • Your employees?
  • Your accountant?

Great guesses! Answer? None of these.

Over the years, I have developed a very faithful best friend in business.  It’s a friend that I can rely on. One that I can really depend on and entrust all of my important things to. This friend doesn’t forget… This friend helps me to stay on top of everything so that I don’t drop anything through the cracks. When I think of this friend, the word "proficient" comes to mind.

This friend has an excellent memory. Maintenance is not an issue with his friend. This friend doesn’t require that I’m perfect. I talk to my friend and tell them all kinds of different things and I never receive judgment or condemnation. I’m never criticized.

So who is this wonderful friend that has stuck by me through the years and has greatly enabled me to be such a proficient business owner?

The answer? It’s sitting in your pocket. Or on your desk. Or charging on your nightstand.

I’m talking about something in your smartphone. More specifically, I’m talking about your voice memo app.

When I’m out and about, I’m constantly thinking about business - and it’s super important that I don’t drop anything through the cracks and don’t forget to do something imperative. It’s of monumental importance to me that I stay on top of everything I need to do, so that I can fulfill my daily goals, follow up with customers, update my website, enter my bank charges, pay my taxes, send someone a happy birthday wish, follow up with a client, program outlook reminders, schedule an oil change, call someone back, update my grocery list, record my mileage, and so on and so forth.

Sure, you can tell yourself "I've got to remember this when I get home!"  Well, that's as useful as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.  It's a sinking ship.  Lose the chairs.  Get a boat.  Stay afloat.

A voice memo app helps me to offload all of the administrative and managerial to-do list additions (it's constantly getting updated) when I think of something new. It allows me to offload the left brain, so that the right brain can continue to function at maximum capacity: so I can create.  Because as a voiceover artist, that's what I do: create.

My left brain is absolutely critical for me to operate business efficiently, and a voice memo app is absolutely critical to help my left brain function not get overloaded and encroach on my right brain's functional space.

How many times have you been out and about, and said something to the effect of “oh shoot, I need to remember to do that“? Weeks later, did you still remember? Months later, did you forget? Or a year later, have you looked back and said “crap, I totally forgot to do that“?

My best friend in business is my voice memo app - and it too has grown and evolved over the years, just like me.  From the early days of using a microcassette recorder, to using a digital recorder, to now having everything I need in a proficient voice memo app on my phone – it helps me to make sure that I stay at the very top of my game and don’t miss anything.

Missing things equals failing on some level. And I despise failure. How about you?  Are you willing to entrust your to-do list to a smartphone voice memo app and make sure that you stay on top of things?  You carry your smart phone around with you anyway, right?

When I get home, I've trained myself to now pull up my phone right when I get to my desk, and go through my voice memo app.  One by one, I go down my list and handle the things that I can, right away....or as soon as humanly possible.  Then, they're done, and I haven't forgotten them.  I'm staying on top of my to-do list.

OK, so you don't like a voice memo app, or feel like you'll forget.  How about geofencing-based reminders?  For example, you're out driving and you need to remember to reinflate your tires when you get home because the light just came on.  "Hey Siri, when I get home, remind me to reinflate my tires."  If you've programmed your home location into Siri, then you can get a reminder for that very thing when you get home.

You may not even be a voiceover artist.  You may just be in business for yourself for some other endeavor.  This little tool can serve you in any industry, or life status, that you're in.  It's efficient, it's effective, it doesn't judge or scold you, and it helps you stay on top of everything you need to.

Here's a great link to some great apps to help you stay on top of your life.
